Support monarchs and our mission: plant milkweed and wildflowers
Getting a head start on the growing season is easier than ever with indoor seed starting. Follow these simple steps to create healthy seedlings ready for transplanting when the time is right.
Containers: Use seed trays, small pots, recycled containers with drainage holes, or even fold your own paper pots from scrap paper or newspaper.
Seed-Starting Mix: Choose a light, sterile mix designed for seedlings.
Seeds: Select varieties suited to your climate and intended garden.
Labels: Mark containers with seed type and planting date.
Moisten the seed-starting mix until it’s damp, not soggy.
Fill your containers, leaving about 1/2 inch from the top.
Plant seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet (a general rule is twice the seed’s diameter).
Space seeds according to the packet instructions to avoid overcrowding.
Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of mix if required.
Use a clear plastic cover or dome to maintain humidity until germination.
Keep containers in a warm spot (65–75°F or 18–24°C) or use a seedling heat mat if needed.
Provide bright, indirect light or set up under a grow light for 12–16 hours a day.
Use a spray bottle or gentle watering can to keep the mix consistently moist.
Avoid overwatering to prevent mold and damping-off disease.
Once seedlings develop their first true leaves, thin out weaker plants if crowded.
Harden off seedlings gradually by exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting.
