Support monarchs and our mission: plant milkweed and wildflowers
Seed balls are a simple, natural method to sow seeds. By combining seeds, compost, and clay into little balls, you create a protective, nutrient-rich capsule that nurtures your seeds until rain and nature help them grow.
Seeds: Choose seeds that fit your local growing conditions and garden goals.
Compost: Provides organic nutrients and helps bind the mixture.
Soft, Workable Clay: Use natural clay. Break up larger chunks by hand until it mixes evenly.
Water: To achieve a dough-like consistency.
Mixing Bowl: For combining your ingredients.
A good starting guideline is roughly a 5:3 ratio of clay to compost by volume, then adjust water as needed. Once you have your mixture, plan to incorporate 3–5 seeds per ball.
Prepare the Dough:
In a mixing bowl, combine the soft, workable clay and compost thoroughly.
As needed, add water while mixing until you achieve a smooth, pliable dough that holds together when squeezed.
Divide and Flatten:
Pinch off a small portion of the dough (about a tablespoon-sized amount) and flatten it gently between your fingers to form a small disc.
Incorporate the Seeds:
Place 3–5 seeds in the center of the flattened disc. (For larger seeds or if you prefer fewer seeds per ball, adjust the number accordingly.)
Form the Seed Ball:
Carefully gather the edges of the disc and roll it between your palms until the seeds are completely enclosed.
Aim for a compact ball roughly 1 inch in diameter, or 1/2 inch for very small seeds
Repeat and Dry:
Repeat the process with the remaining dough and seeds.
If you plan to store the seed balls or want them firmer before sowing, arrange them on a flat surface in a sunny, well-ventilated area to dry for 24–48 hours. Alternatively, if you’re in a moist climate or wish to sow them immediately, you can skip the drying step.
